Free Music Theory On-line Course

This course is designed for adult women singers (specifically women barbershoppers) but anyone is welcome to sign up.

At the end of the course, you should be able to

  • name any note on treble or bass clef.
  • name any key signature.
  • know the note to play on your pitch pipe at the start of a song.
  • sing your first note from hearing the pitch.
  • perform simple sight-singing.
  • sing any simple note length combinations.
  • understand simple musical terms and signs.

And it is totally free! (Although donations are gratefully received - $10 per person recommended!)

Overview

The course consists of 12 lessons. At the end of the course, you will (hopefully) be able to name any key signature, so you will know the note to play on your pitch pipe and be able to sing your first note from hearing the pitch. You will also have practised lots of sight-singing and understand simple note lengths and musical terms and signs.

The lessons are:

Lesson 1: Piano Keys

Lesson 2: Treble Clef

Lesson 3: Note Lengths

Lesson 4: Bass Clef

Lesson 5: More note lengths, tied notes and dotted notes

Lesson 6: Key Signatures - Flats

Lesson 7: Tones and Semitones and Key Signatures for Sharps

Lesson 8: Rests & Time Signatures

Lesson 9: Intervals - Up

Lesson 10: Intervals - Down

Lesson 11: Terms and Signs

Lesson 12: Minor Scales

Acknowledgements

Thanks to those who have helped and supported me during this project - particularly to my partner, Stan who has been very patient as I spent many evenings and weekends on my PC working on this and to Jane Rylands who did the original error checking the musical content of the lessons.

Thanks also to Jolanda, Geesje and Kylie from my old quartet (Treble Makers in Sydney) who allowed me to use our photo for the background picture on the home page. (I'm the one on the right.)
